Getting it going
Open Routine Run on the iPhone once. Until then the watch says Waiting for iPhone.
Raise your wrist
The watch opens on the run that is going. On it:
- The step you are on, its timer or how far through you are, and a row of beads.
- Next (the forward arrow), and Again where going round the step again means something.
- The ellipsis, for everything else.
- The step's own buttons underneath, such as a shortcut to run. One that has to leave the app says Finishes on the phone, and it runs there.

With several runs going, swipe sideways between them. Double Tap presses Next, or the step's first button when the step is waiting on one.
Behind the ellipsis:
- This step: Do it later and Do it last. See Pause, Later and Last.
- This run: Pause or Resume, Pin or Unpin, Come back to it (in an hour, this evening, tomorrow, next week), and Note, which you can dictate.
- Stop, on its own, at the foot.
The lists
Swipe back to Running. Swipe a run right for Next, left for Again and Pause. Runs that are not going wait under it, behind Paused and Later.
The button at the top right switches to Routines. Swipe a routine right to Start it, or open it for Start, Turn it off and its steps.
If a Focus is holding routines back on the iPhone, a line at the top says so, and you can show everything.
On the watch face
- Current Step and Coming up, as complications.
- Upcoming Routine, in the Smart Stack when a routine is due.
- The run's Lock Screen card appears in the Smart Stack too, with Next on it.
Siri and the Action button
Say "Next step in Routine Run", "Start Morning in Routine Run", "Routine Run current step", or "Note this in Routine Run". On an Apple Watch Ultra, the Action button can run Do the One Thing. See Action button.
When it goes wrong
Goes when iPhone is back. The iPhone is out of reach. What you pressed is kept and sent when they are back in touch.
Cannot reach iPhone. As of 10:42. What you see is from that time. Bring the phone closer, or open the app on it.
It had already moved on. The run moved on the iPhone before your press arrived, so nothing was done.
A routine is missing. A Focus on the iPhone may be hiding it. See Place and Focus.
